Kahwe Roastery is for everyone interested in coffee.
The approach to everything we do is relaxed, honest, open and down to earth. Our aim is to conduct our business as ethically and transparently as possible.
It is of utmost importance to us that the coffee farmers get compensated fairly for the work they do. Our intention is to develop relationships based on trust and mutual understanding, focusing on sustainability.
We shape the world through our actions and behavior as individuals and the scale only gets bigger for companies. Kahwe Roastery’s intention is to act humanely, taking the environment and all living beings into consideration. In the end, we are all one.

THE BIRTH OF KAHWE
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Kahwe’s story began in 2017 when an experienced barista Joel Marttala felt a strong pull towards roasting coffee. The idea had been brewing in his mind for some time and he actually had a chance to purchase a local artisan roastery. After carefully considering the matter and finding the right business partners he decided to rather start his own.
Tito has an ingrained connection to coffee having been born and brought up in Nyeri, central Kenya. Coffee has been part of his everyday life since childhood. He was taught by his parents every step of production: weeding, pruning, picking, sorting, and delivering cherries to a wash station.
He now brings his deep understanding and passion for coffee to Kahwe having joined the team as Joel’s business partner in November 2025.
You can get to know us and the roastery better by booking a tasting session. Read more about the sessions we offer by clicking the link below.

Joel Marttala
Ex-chef and -barista Joel, Kahwe’s founder, has been working with coffee since 2011. The force that kickstarted Kahwe in 2017 is driven by a certain perfectionism when it comes to bringing the best out of every single coffee he works with.
- Favorite coffee: A fruity explosion, preferably brewed using a Chemex
Joel balances out the hectic nature of working at the roastery by spending time in nature, baking and participating in army reserve activities.

Tito-Kiriethe Wamutitu
Tito is a media practitioner by training and a radio producer by practice with an ingrained connection to coffee and the slopes of Mt. Kenya. He was born and raised in Nyeri County, central Kenya, with views of the country’s tallest mountain. In the 1970s, in a quiet village along the Gura River – often called Africa’s fastest river – he was born into a life where land, people, and coffee were inseparable.
From an early age, coffee farming was part of his everyday life. Alongside his siblings, uncles, and aunts, he learned every step of the process: weeding, pruning, picking, sorting, and delivering cherries to Gachatha Coffee Factory, a local washing station now internationally renowned for its exceptional coffee.
He fondly recalls the neighbor’s signature celebratory night-time singing that beckoned the arrival of the coffee payout season. This season was also marked by trips to Nyeri town by his late grandfather to collect the family’s coffee payments, as well as lots of gifts the family head brought back from each visit to the Tetu Coffee Growers Farmers Bank.
These landscapes and rhythms of coffee production sparked a lifelong connection to coffee and its rich culture. Today, Tito lives in Finland, where he brings his deep understanding and passion for coffee into a new era as a co-owner of Kahwe.
